How Long Does Pergola Installation Take?

Quick Answer

The actual pergola build takes 1-4 days for most standard installations. However, the full project timeline from initial call to completed structure is typically 6-12 weeks when you include permit lead time (2-5 weeks in most Fox Valley municipalities), material procurement for aluminum systems (4-8 weeks), and footing cure time (3-7 days). If you need a pergola by a specific date, plan well in advance – the build itself is fast, but the front-end steps take time.

Detailed Explanation

Homeowners are often surprised when we explain the timeline, so here’s a clear breakdown of what takes time and why.

The Build Itself

Once permits are in hand, materials are on site, and footings are poured and cured, the actual construction goes quickly:

12×12 to 12×16 wood pergola: 1-2 days for the build, not counting footing cure time.

16×16 to 16×20 wood or aluminum pergola: 2-3 days for the build.

Large wood or aluminum pergola (20×20+) or complex design: 3-4 days.

Louvered roof pergola system: 3-5 days depending on size and features.

Gazebo: 3-7 days depending on size and roofing complexity. Gazebo installation.

These build timelines don’t count permit lead time, material procurement, or footing cure time – all of which happen before the main build begins.

Footing Cure Time

Before any posts are set and loaded, concrete footings need to cure. In warm summer weather (above 70 degrees), concrete achieves working strength in 3-5 days. In Illinois spring and fall conditions (50-60 degrees), curing takes 5-7 days. We don’t load footings before they’ve reached adequate strength.

We typically schedule footing work several days before the main build to allow for cure time.

Permit Lead Time

This is the longest variable in the timeline. In Oswego, Aurora, Montgomery, Yorkville, and Plainfield, building permits for outdoor structures typically take 2-5 weeks from submission to approval. Complex projects or seasonal backlogs at the building department can extend this.

We submit permits promptly after the contract is signed and material decisions are made. We can’t start the build until the permit is in hand.

Material Procurement

For wood pergolas, most lumber is available locally with 1-2 week lead times. For aluminum pergola systems, materials are ordered from manufacturers and typically have 4-8 week lead times. We coordinate material delivery with your build date.

For popular louvered roof systems from established manufacturers, lead times can occasionally stretch to 10-12 weeks during high-demand periods.

Full Project Timeline Summary

| Phase | Duration | |—|—| | Estimate and design | 1-2 weeks | | Permit preparation and submission | 1 week | | Permit approval | 2-5 weeks | | Material procurement (aluminum/louvered) | 4-8 weeks (runs concurrently with permit) | | Footing pour and cure | 1 week | | Build | 1-4 days | | Final inspection | 1-3 days after build | | Total from first call to completion | 6-12 weeks typical |

The permit and material procurement phases run concurrently rather than sequentially in most cases, which compresses the overall timeline.

Important Considerations

Tell us your deadline early. If you need the pergola done before a specific date – a party, a family event, or the start of summer – tell us when you first call. We’ll tell you honestly whether the timeline is achievable and what we can do to help it along (faster permit prep, early material ordering).

Summer is our busiest season. Projects started in March-April have a better chance of being completed before summer entertaining season than projects started in June. Plan early if timing matters.

Weather affects concrete work. Footing excavation and concrete pouring require above-freezing temperatures and reasonably dry conditions. A stretch of cold or rainy weather can delay this step. We communicate proactively when weather affects the schedule.
